How to be eco-friendly during pandemic times?

How to be eco-friendly during pandemic times?

As we’re slowly leaving the mandatory lockdown and entering what is called the “new normality”, new rules apply. Like wearing face masks and gloves every time you leave your house. How can you be eco-friendly during this period?

The past couple of months have been particularly hard for sustainability enthusiasts. Making us wear disposable and single-use items, in order keep us safe from the virus. Even though it all started just a few months ago, we can already see the environmental impact. Face masks are washing up on Hong Kong beaches.

Fortunately, it is possible to avoid some of these single-use items and keep ourselves safe at the same time.

Here are our simple tips on how to keep a sustainable lifestyle during this “new normality”:

Use a reusable face mask

As lockdown is being lifted, using a face mask is pretty much mandatory these days. Luckily for us, reusable alternatives are becoming ubiquitous in the market. Allowing us to keep up with our sustainable lifestyle and saving up some money.

Where can you find one? Start by checking your local zero waste Facebook groups or Etsy. This way you can buy locally and support small businesses.

If you’re in Spain, you can also find reusable masks at eseoese or Gala Black.

If you’re in Portugal, you can get one from these brands

Refillable Hand Sanitiser Gel

Remember those little travel kit bottles? It’s time to put these back in business. Get these refilled at your local zero waste store (if it’s open for business) or buy large sanitiser bottle so you can refill the little bottles for the whole family.

Carry a small soap bar with you

This one is more for when life gets back to normal and we are allowed to enter other kind of facilities (like museums, movie theatres, public restrooms…). By carrying a tiny soap with you, not only you’re guaranteeing that you have what you need to wash your hands but you’re also avoiding touching surfaces that might be contaminated.
