How to be eco-friendly on vacation?
Oh vacation, vacation! That time of the year when you finally have the chance to disconnect from your every day life and break your routines. But just because you’re traveling or out of regular environment, it doesn’t mean you should ditch your eco-friendly habits.
Even though 2020 is the most unusual year when it comes to traveling and getaways, because of all the travel restrictions and safety measures, here are 5 things you can do to be environmental friendly while having your well-deserved rest:
1- Pack light
Packing looks different for everyone. While some have a hard time selecting the pieces they’ll take for a few days away, others have it all figured out before they actually start packing. No matter if you belong to the former or the latter, everyone can have a more sustainable vacation simply by packing lighter.
Opt for versatile pieces that can be worn multiple times and that you can create different outfits with. This can be a perfect opportunity to work with a capsule wardrobe, even if it’s just for a few days.
Stick to the basics. Don’t get carried away by all those “what if” scenarios that usually come to your mind while you’re packing. When was the last time that you actually needed these extra items?
By packing lighter you’re saving CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. As less energy will be required during your travel, no matter which transportation method you use - unless you’re walking the whole distance.
2- Create your own zero waste travel kit
A travel kit, just as a zero waste kit, might look different for everyone. As we all have different needs and things we can’t live without.
Creating a plastic and liquid-free travel kit is the first step towards a more eco-friendly and relaxed vacation. Especially if you’re traveling by plane.

3- Travel by bus or train
While traveling by car might be more comfortable than taking public transportation, it is also more harmful to the environment.
Use your vacation as an opportunity to do something different and break some of your regular habits. Leave your car at home, unless it’s an electric or hybrid.
Pick a travel location that can easily be reached by bus or train, that have a good transportation system or that most sightseeings are within a walking distance from where you’re staying.
4- Stay at an eco-friendly lodging
Hotels and guesthouses, as well as other lodging alternatives, are becoming more environmentally conscious. Do some research online and check their company values before booking.
In case you’re craving spending some time in the nature, camping is an oldie but goodie.
And if you can’t find (or afford) an eco-friendly lodging, there are a few things you can do to make your stay as sustainable as possible:
Don’t use the mini bottles of shampoo or shower gel available at the hotel bathroom.
Avoid putting the towels to wash every day. As you can use these for a couple of days, if not during your entire stay.
Don’t use disposable or single-use items during your meals.
5- Say NO to processed foods
Processed foods aren’t just bad for your health but also for the environment. As these usually come wrapped in plastic or single-use containers.
Your vacation can be the perfect opportunity for you to:
Discover new foods. Browse through the local market stalls or eat at a local restaurant. These usually work with local producers, so it’s a great opportunity to support the local economy and small business owners.
Cook your own meals using fresh ingredients, if you have access to a kitchen.
Eat healthier. Fruits and nuts are the perfect snacks for when you’re out and about. Also, these are really affordable and easy to find.
Remember: life is all about balance. You’re on vacation. It’s your chance to disconnect and recharge. So it’s totally fine if you don’t do everything perfect.
